This wine comes from the highest vines in the Dão region – and all of Portugal for that matter! These vines represent an authentic mountain vineyard as the only sites in the region cultivated in terraces, planted between 100 and 600 meters. Their extreme altitude and climate, protected from the intense winds from Spain and distanced from the sea air mass of the Atlantic, mark an exceptional territory that translate into wines of unique character.

94 Points (2020 vintage review), John Gilman, View From The Cellar
“The 2020 Dão Tinto from Lúcia Ferreira hails from high altitude, granite hillsides. The wine is composed from a blend of sixty percent Touriga Nacional and forty percent Tinta Roriz, with the wine fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised in stainless steel. The wine comes in at 13.5 percent alcohol in the 2020 vintage and delivers a superb aromatic constellation of dark berries, coffee bean, distant bonfire, grilled meats, a fine base of stony soil tones and a touch of cola in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and impeccably balanced, with a superb core of fruit, excellent soil signature and grip, ripe, buried tannins and a long, tangy and impressively complex finish. This is outstanding juice and an absolutely insane bargain! 2030-2065.”

Dão Tinto 2019: “60% touriga nacional, 40% tinta roriz. Terraced vineyards on granite in the high altitude Seia sub zone. Dark red black./ Oh, that’s got the granite basis too. Plus sweet fruit. Plus the grand scale of nacional. Douro set in Dao gives a unique combo of impressions./ Ample fruit presence in body, texture, and flavor of the class varietals, which are more trans-Portugal than specific to Dao. They give a more yielding interpretation of a Dao at this age. Plenty of suavity at age five plus nacional innate tannin left to shed, albeit fine grained and manageable. Long, flavorful, chewy aftertaste. 17.0+.”

This wine from the Dão is by Quinta do Covão in the stunning village of Sandomil, with its fluvial beach in the river Alva and its old Roman bridge, nestled in the Beira Alta subzone, near the city of Seia. The vineyards of the Quinta are scattered along the slopes of the Estrela mountain range, deep in a continental climate with high altitudes where cool nights follow warm sunshine. This climate, combined with granitic soils and fresh river water, is ideal for growing grapes with high acidity and making wines that can be cellared. Lucia Ferreira, sister to our Douro winemaker, Filipe Ferreira, oversees the viticulture and vinification here.
Both fresh and firm, this wine is persistent across the palate showing versatility and elegance with toasty elements accompanying fresh red fruits and soft tannins.
